Urban Hen-Keeping Books at Barnes & Noble

Our Billings Barnes & Noble store on 24th Street (west end) recently remarked on an increase in urban hen-keeping books within the past entire YEAR (not just since this initiative started in April). They have added to their inventory in response. It’s a great sign when not only do people start to educate themselves about an issue, their local bookstore(s) respond to that trend! Proving to me that Billings residents CAN and WILL be responsible hen owners, and that Billings business will benefit from this issue.  Big Thanks to member Catherine for pulling this list together and talking with B&N staff! ~TJ (“>

Some of the books on keeping chickens I found at Barnes & Noble: You can read the reviews and overview of each on the B&N website.  Cat

  1. The Chicken Club’s favorite is Keeping Chickens with Ashley English because she is our own favorite home grown expert CHiCkEneR here in Asheville, North Carolina she and her husband and new baby live here!

The Keeping Chickens is one of four in series of modern homesteading…the others are Keeping Bees, Home Dairy and Canning. We can truly say, “we knew her when”…..

On another topic, I helped get the new less restrictive urban chicken laws passed here in Asheville in 2009 and so have done plenty of my own research. One of the nice things I’ve noticed lately is that there are more and more materials written from a more humane viewpoint. When someone asks if I raise chicken for meat, I politely say, “no, I don’t eat my pets…when your dog dies, do you plan to eat him?” It doesn’t make anyone wrong…it’s all in one’s perspective.

Keep up the good work Billings! Wishing you much success,

Cathy Williams, founder, Mother Hen’s Chicken Club on facebook and The Chicken Club at http://www.thechickenclub.wordpress.com and co-founder Asheville City Chickens. Our bumper stickers turned a few heads down here: “WE STILL LAY”. Our meetup address is http://www.meetup.com/chickener-support-in-asheville. Via con Huevos!
