National Geographic – Heirloom Chickens

Check out this article in the July 2011 issue of National Geographic, regarding bio-diversity in foods. There is a great sidebar/photo gallery of Heirloom Breeds of animals, including chickens. We’re very fond of the Buff Orpington hen; not only do they need protection as a fairly rare breed, they are also very quiet and gentle, and being particularly “fluffy” handle our Zone 5 (-20 lows in winter) Montana weather quite well.

Whichever breed(s) you choose for your family, keep in mind that bio-diversity is as important in backyard hens as it is in our gardens… the world was created with thousands of varieties for a reason! Let’s keep it that way.
